I have never said this before, but I enjoy the series far more than the book. I ALWAYS enjoy the books more. I do not really care for Elena's book character. She is spoiled, manipulative and in general not a very nice person. Maybe if I had read the book first, I may have liked it more. Too late for that though. I also hated Katherine in the book. She was weak. Her suicide was (to me) stupid. I love Katherine from the series. That woman is just plain evil. And the boys??? They did nothing for me either. Sorry but I will stick with the TV series.Tags : Amazon.com: The Awakening / The Struggle (Vampire Diaries, Books 1-2) (9780061140976): L. J. Smith: Books,L. J. The Awakening / The Struggle Vampire Diaries Books 12 L J Smith Books Reviews
I watched the TV series on streaming which was so different than the book that's it's hard to believe it's the "same" story. The TV version is much better than the book! That may be the first time I've felt this way--usually the book is way better then the "movie" version.
This is now the second book (or series in this case) where I genuinely believe the show is better. The books are just weird and not in any sort of good way.
As a fan of the television series, I found it a strange experience to try to get into the book series that it was based upon. (I'm not the target age for the books, so there's that, even though I read and enjoy a lot of novels aimed at teen audiences Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Fault in Our Stars, Twilight Saga, Hunger Games, The Giver, etc.)
I decided to order this book since I started watched "The Vampire Diaries" on the CW. I love the show, and from my experience the book is always better.
When I started the book, I was immediately ingrossed. I read each book in a day, The Awakening and then The Struggle. As soon as I finished I ran to Target to buy the next in the series that night, and finished that the next day too. The tv series and the book series are very different, but both are equally as interesting. You fall in love with the characters so quickly. Stefan the mysterious new guy, Elena; Queen of the school, Damon; the dangerous brother. And all of the friends feel like your friends by the time you are reading it. The characters are so real to you.
And the story is great. The idea that vampires have talisments and can walk in the sun, the incrediable backstory for them, the whole thing is wonderful.
I highly recommend this entire series. Whether you watch the show, read other vampire series, such as Twilight or the Sookie Series...It's a great story. Very original with the talisments and the thick backstory not just with each character, but also with the town.
Wonderful read. Be prepared to be completely preoccupied for a few days with the series. You won't want to put it down.
I am a huge fan of the vampire romance genre!!! However, to like/love these books you probably shouldn't watch the TV show first. I am a HUGE fan of The Vampire Diaries TV show, and when I found out the series were based off of books then I decided to buy the first few books. The story is really different and I already liked the plot of the TV show so these books were just an okay series for me. I only read the first four books and I wasn't to crazy about them... So only buy these if you haven't already seen the TV show!
I just love the series and have gotten into this book, granted Elana is blond in the book and her best friend is Meridith or something in the book, but I love the show and still try to imagine the characters in the book as the ones on tv, if your expecting the tv series to be the book, dont. But if your looking for a good book with the most of the characters from the show being in the book then so far ok. Elana wants Stephen Salvatore so bad in the book, she literally cries and wines about it. No brother either from what I gathered, Yet. No Jeremy in this book, but a sister I think, not sure yet. So try it you might like it, I watch and read both and end up with a pleasant mix, so enjoy, I would recommend this book.
update; first book was really good, ez read so I like that, not at all what the show says, so go with it.
I honestly can't tell if the book is good, because I just can't get over the terrible accents that the narrator uses for the characters. Specifically the horrendous half-Italian, half-Romanian accent she uses for Damon and Stephan Salvatore. It's... really, amazingly terrible. The narrator ruins it.
I have never said this before, but I enjoy the series far more than the book. I ALWAYS enjoy the books more. I do not really care for Elena's book character.
