This is my first book by Caron Kamps Widden, but it certainly won't be the last. I really enjoyed Restoration. The name applies to so many things in this story filled with very human characters that are not only likeable, but flawed, like most of us. The story flowed easily, never dragged and pulled me in from the first page.

I think I'll be rereading this soon because there are a lot of nuances here that make me think more will show themselves as I read it again. This was a beautifully layered story with wonderful, strong emotions that probably hit home for many readers. Give this book a try, you'll be glad you did.
This book is extremely well written, beautifully paced and filled with wonderful characters. Without car chases and villains, the novel is a page-turnerthat. Many people will read it in a weekend on the beach or in a secluded cabin. Caron Widden writes the man's perspective with uncanny insight, especially when the lead character, a widower, becomes interested in another woman. I think the connection between the restoration of the Victorian mansion and stages of healing could have been developed with greater detail but, in the end, I felt restored and tremendously glad that I took a chance on this fine book.
Widden writes details, dialogue, par excellence! and does it so off-handed that you'd think she was a born writer. That has to be the case, come to think of it.
But why was the book "Audrey Rose" coming to mind, when reading Widden's book? Was her characters like those in "Audrey Rose"? No. It was her style of writing.
The restoration of an old house, in parallel with the restoration of a torn-apart family, is an exacting and exciting basis for this book Restoration.

Some small parts of this story bothered me, but the overall tale of love, loss and rebuilding is touching and well worth reading. Though there are small rough moments in the writing, the emotions seem real and believable, the characters suffer as real people do, and the resolutions seemed natural, not at all forced. I can recommend this book.
