The Witch of Artemis Volume 1 Yui Hara Books
'The Witch of Artemis" is a story which grabbed me from the beginning with its promise of a good sci-fi, fantasy story and did not disappoint. Though much of this volume can be viewed as helping to set up the larger story for future volumes, there is much positive about this volume that can also be viewed as a excellent manga to be picked up and enjoyed on its own merits.Kazkui, the hero, and Marie, the heroine, of the story are developed in such a way that that bits of their past are learned, enough to whet the appetite for learning more about their past, and hints of what might in fact unite them is given, in such a way that there seems to be a connection which neither of them might realize.
Volume 1 starts with Kazuki remembering his father's tales of another world called Artemis, and being berated by his brother for not focusing instead on his work. When whispers of someone strange being in town reach him and seeing someone pass him he follows and through a series of events which will not be spoiled in this review, he finds himself on Artemis with Marie seeking her help.
Marie does help Kazuki then basically tells him because of the amount of power it will take to send him home, for now at least, he is stuck on Artemis which doesn't seem to bother Kazuki at all, but does somewhat lead him to link himself to Marie, who he finds is the Grand Witch of Artemis, but to others is seemingly called "The Phantom Witch".
Marie by appearance a young girl, is in reality hundreds of years old leading to moments where she shows girlish embarrassment but other times of world weariness, especially for a world which blames Marie for causing the problems she helps to fix rather then thanking her for fixing the problems.
Marie goes out of her way at times to protect Kazuki and for his part Kazuki tries to help Marie in her quest to help others. One time provides hints of an interesting back-story from Marie's past at why she reacts how she does to this particular problem and why she only seems to helpe because Kazuki insists and in part to keep an eye on him as he helps, a story I look forward to seeing more of in volume 2.
As this promising first volume further progresses we learn that Marie has a huge obligation, though at this time it is left somewhat vague as to what this obligation is it seems clear that Kazuki is not on Artemis by accident, as only they can do fulfill this obligation and that they must hurry, though it also seems clear neither knows of the time constraint on their task, or perhaps the depth of the obligation.
Overall a great first volume well worth the read setting up a great series and great promise for future volumes.

The Witch of Artemis Volume 1 Yui Hara Books Reviews
"The Witch of Artemis" is a Japanese fantasy comic (complete in three volumes) serialized in Monthly Comic Blade. The original title is "Hoshi no Uicchi" ("Witch of the Star"). The manga is created by Yui Hara, and "The Witch of Artemis" is her first longer serialization. This is a heart-warming fantasy tale, and Volume One serves as a set-up for more adventures and mysteries.
The story follows an 11-year-old orphan boy named Kazuki. Unlike his older brother, Kazuki still believes the stories his father told when he was a child "There are two stars where people live one is Planet (in English edition, "Earth") where I live, and the other is Artemis." When Kazuki encounters a sassy little girl with beautiful eyes before his shop, who claims "I like doing things that help others," Kazuki realizes what his father once told him is true.
The moment Kazuki wishes to go to Artemis, he is whisked away into the space by the little "witch" - actually, her name is Marie. A new life begins on Marie's planet for Kazuki, but it seems there is a secret or two about the strange girl Marie, and another mysterious girl who had cast a spell on him.
As the creator herself admits in her afterword, the plotline of the manga is "a bit clumsy" at times. Motives of some characters (Marie, for instance) are not still clear, but they will be explained in the following volumes, and her soft and cute art work will make up for that, well, almost. No battles (well, so far), no "fan service," either. If you like fantasy tales with likable characters, try "The Witch of Artemis."
This is a a very straight to the point story in which there is great charactor development plus a potential does exist in future volumes of the story, as everyone knows every volume 1 of any manga is basically the introduction of charactors and the main plot, this volume 1 is similar. It has a great potential and when I finished reading it, it made me want to read more I am looking forward to the future volumes because there are still so many things that need to be answered and so much potential in the story build up. From one to ten, ten being great and one being bad, overall the story gets an 8, charactor development, 9 and overall introductory volume i give it 9. There is alot of potential in this story and this is a good manga to start a potential collection with just because volume 1 leaves you wondering what will happen next, I feel any story that leaves you wanting to read more has the potential to develop nicely. It left me wanting to read more, its a good read i recommend it to anyone who wants to read a different manga story from the usual, its a good how do i say it, it has potential
