I recently re-read the Perfect Waltz by this author and didn't enjoy it much so I decided to try one I hadn't read before. It's the starting book in the Merridew Series. The h is the oldest of 5 sisters and she's also the plain one, the others are beautiful. She and her sisters escape their wicked grandfather's home after he breaks his ankle. They go to their great-uncle in London, where he insists he can't launch any of the other sisters into society until the h is married. This being because she's plain and won't stand a chance if her sisters are seen first. It's not a favourite them of mine but it was kind of cute the way the H sees her as beautiful. The H is a confirmed bachelor and a rake but he changes from the time he meets the h. The h, meanwhile, has been betrothed for 4 years and is waiting for her fiancé to return from India. I didn't find the main story very romantic. I preferred the secondary romance between the h's sister and the H's cousin. I think my biggest gripe with this book is the way some of the characters become more like caricatures. The wicked grandfather and the fiancé mainly. The book is clean until the last chapter, which then becomes the sex chapter. I'm a bit over this type of HR, I've been reading too many of the traditional type and I way prefer them.

The Perfect Rake Merridew Series Anne Gracie 9780425203958 Books Reviews

I really liked the book - it was realistic, with an interesting plot and some really funny dialogues between the hero and heroine. The secondary characters were also very lovely. The only thing that was constantly distracting me from the storyline was the Hungarian count and violinist Felix Vladimir Rimavska. I come from a Slavic country myself and Rimavska is a female slavic name (Rimavsky would be a male version) so it sounded as if Hope's sister Faith fell in love with a girl. Plus neither Felix nor Vladimir are Hungarian names, so it felt a bit odd. I don't want to sound too picky but Anne Gracie writes such a great romance and yet she doesn't even Google this during her research. But it doesn't change anything about the quality of the romance - it is definitely worth reading. I would give 4,5 stars if I could.
So I have read this book numerous times, always thinking it can’t possibly be as good as I remember, and it always surprises me just how funny and engaging this wonderful book is! Top 5 historical romances for me, absolutely, and as I have read over 1,000, that is saying something. The dialogue is so good, the scene of Gideon and Prudence meeting is so enchanting and I can’t help laughing out loud. And the romance is abundant (even the secondary romance gives me butterflies). All of Anne Gracie’s books are great, but Perfect Rake is hands down my favorite.
Love at first sight happens to 3 of the 4 main characters in this book. Only Prudence, the h, isn't convinced of love upon meeting the H, Gideon. This eliminates a great deal of dithering and allows a more character-driven novel.

The writing is good. The dialogue is snappy. Those characters who are not evil are endearing, including the small cast of secondary characters. In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed the book except for one thing (SPOILER) The ending involves a foaming-at-the-mouth, irrational, menacing madman. That is one of the devices I detest most. A character-driven novel deserves a character-driven solution rather than a dangerous crazy person popping up.
A Perfect Rake is perfectly fun and I was rooting for Pru and her sisters from the very start. Even the meeting between Pru and Gideon was so funny. She very much was trying to save him from a debacle of her making and he was having far too much fun just playing with her. It was entertaining and I was thinking the entire book was going to be so much fun. And it was at times but there is a lot of down time when nothing is really happening and so some of this book moved very slow for me.

Gideon is completely fun. An unapologetic rake who has a few scruples like no innocents and only will bed partners. He is great at teasing and cajoling Pru who is full of rules and is so busy taking care of everyone else she has little time for her own desires. Some of their banter was terribly fun though.

“Do you think ladies’ eyebrows can communicate as well?” she asked.
“No, they don’t have sufficient thicketry,” he said with authority.
“Thicketry?”
“Yes, that is the official term.”

Of course as soon as the infamous rake meets the damsel in distress it is an instant infatuation with her and he becomes pretty besotted rather quickly. Still Gideon was the high point for me in the book. The way he sees Pru is really something and I liked how he saw her past for what it was and didn’t care about it a smidge.

Pru has a lot to overcome, including and MIA fiancé that wandered off to India without her. That isn’t going to stand in the way of Gideon though. Pru is the prize and his eye is on her no doubt.

This is an easy read that could have been trimmed a little around the edges but had some nice characters and a fun strangers falsely engaged story.
I was in need of a good laugh and a well written book and fellow blogger Sonya came up with a recommendation at just the right moment.

This is a very funny mistaken identity trope that evolves into instant attraction. But Prudence is betrothed to Phillip who has been in India for 4 ½ years. Prudence is not the type of woman to set aside a promise made. Gideon, is a true rake but he has fallen in love at first sight and is determined to win over Prudence.

I laughed, because the banter is hold-your-tummy funny. The Grandfather is so diabolically evil that we know Pru and her sisters need the protection Gideon and his cousin, the Duke, can offer. The character development is spot on. The plot is well written. My only criticism is that I felt it a bit too long. This is my first read of a book by Ms. Gracie who has written many romance novels. And I assure you it will not be my last.
